Exercise Room Safety

Guidelines
  • Clean and appropriate attire only. No open-toed shoes, sandals, boots, or jeans. Shirts are required.

  • No food or drink except water.

  • No dropping or throwing equipment.

  • Wipe off equipment after each use. Hand towels - which may not be removed from the room - are provided free of charge to users.

  • Re-rack weights, bars, and plates.

  • Power-lifting (i.e. cleans, clean and jerk, heavy dead-lifts, any uncontrolled lifting) is prohibited.

  • Equipment may not be removed from the room.

  • Notify a staff member immediately of any equipment problems.

  • ESS is not responsible for any user’s personal belongings.
Contact a staff member if you require extra assistance because of a disability.

  • 20 minute time limit on cardiovascular machines when there is a wait list.

Recommendations
  • Start exercising slowly and gradually increase effort over time.

  • Warm up before exercising and cool down gradually.

  • Wait at least 2 hours after eating before exercise. And, after exercise, wait about 20 minutes before eating.

  • Use only tepid water to bathe or shower after exercising - water that is too hot can cause dizziness and/or fainting.

  • Alternate high and low intensity exercise to avoid overuse injuries and to prevent “over-training” fatigue.

  • The American College of Sports Medicine recommends drinking 2 cups of water 15-20 minutes prior to exercise and 1 cup of water for every 15 minutes of exercise.
